CWS announces death of creator and founder Bruce Wang
Citizen Wang Studio are devastated to announce the recent death of our creator and founder, Bruce Wang.
Bruce Wang died peacefully in his sleep late on Friday night, 7 April 2023. He had been battling a long illness with tenacity, strength and good humour.
He passed away in Marie Curie Hospice, Hampstead, at the tragically young age of 69.
Bruce had been born in Kowloon, but moved to England with his family when he was 7.
He had studied at Leeds University before becoming apprenticed to a master carpenter, design and craft work which he loved.
He later became an actor, appearing in films like Revolver (2005), Redemption (2013), and Bridget Jones’s Baby (2016). One of his earliest parts on television was in Series 3 Episode 3 of Father Ted, (1998), The Bomb on the Milk Float. The disgruntled milkman who planted the bomb, tells Father Ted, ‘When that milk float goes off, you’ll hear it all the way to the North Pole.’
As the bomb explodes, the final scene cuts to Bruce, playing a bewildered fisherman in furs, holding a fishing line over a gap in the ice.

Bruce Wang, ‘the photographer’s photographer’
But his crowning glory was photography. Many called him ‘the photographer’s photographer.’
He was rarely to be seen without his favourite camera, a Leica, hung around his neck. And many meetings with him were marked by him suddenly exclaiming ‘it’s photograph time!’
Bruce was a perfectionist and devoted to ‘showing not telling’. He published five collections of photographs of Drag Kings and one final collection of photographs describing what motivated him in his approach to photography and advising photographic students on the art.
True to form, he called the book, ‘Ways of Showing’.

He was in the process of updating the book when he died.
Bruce Wang will be deeply missed by all who knew him. In particular, those who worked with him on Citizen Wang Studios, Debbie Peck, his SEO and website developer, Alex Fodor, his photographic collaborator, his frequent co-blogger, Naomi Eldred-Ross and Kathryn Johnston, who contributed to the Irish News blog on CWS.

Shortly before he died, Bruce married Kathryn Johnston in the Marie Curie Hospice in Hampstead. As well as his wife, he is survived by a brother, sister-in-law, nephew and great-nephew and niece in the UK and two sisters in America.
His loss is incalculable.
A full appreciation of Bruce Wang, the man, the actor, the writer and photographer and friend will be published at a later date.
